Transitions of Youth at Risk in Kentucky

Description
The purpose of the Kentucky Educational Collaborative for State Agency Children (KECSAC) Transitions study is to identify and describe key components of successful transition of students in state agency A-6 education programs. Data is currently (2007-2008) being gathered from administrators at 110 A-6 educational programs and 25 youth in KECSAC programs. Focus groups and individual interviews are being used. The interview questions focus on: transition planning and supports, components of successful transition, obstacles to successful transition, and settings to/from which transition occurs.

  • Brief History of the Project
In 2006, the EKU Department of Occupational Therapy partnered with the Kentucky Educational Collaborative for State Agency Children (KECSAC) to develop occupational therapy programming to youth with mental health needs in non-traditional educational settings. During the 2006-2007 academic year, Amy Marshall provided weekly services at three KECSAC sites: Barnabas Home in Jackson County, the Safe Harbor Academy at the Methodist Home in Woodford County, and the Madison County Day Treatment Program. Direct and indirect services were provided, according to the individual’s needs. The following are example of services provided: assessment of youth, intervention with groups and individuals, supervision and placement of 8 occupational therapy graduate students and 2 social work students.
